Companies investing in AI are increasingly putting more money into marketing their AI products. According to ad-tracking firm MediaRadar, at least $40 million has been spent this year on advertising AI products across various platforms. In recent months, there has been a significant increase in spending.
Tech giants and startups are racing to stand out in the AI market, resulting in a 550% increase in spending in the third quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. MediaRadar analyzed spending data from over 360 advertisers and found that the number of advertisers in the third quarter of 2023 increased by 135% compared to the previous year.
However, only 6% of AI advertisers spent over $100,000, contributing $36 million to the total spending in the first nine months. The remaining 94% collectively spent just $4 million. MediaRadar highlighted new major advertisers like IBM and Salesforce, as well as startups like Dialpad.
This increase in advertising spending reflects the growing importance of AI in various business and societal sectors. In September alone, AI advertising saw a 730% increase compared to August, thanks to new advertisers and a surge in spending from IBM across TV and online video.
AI Advertising Formats
In terms of AI advertising formats, TV received 34% of the total spending, online video received 29%, and print received 12%. Digital advertising accounted for $19.8 million or 49% of the total spend. This included $11.7 million for online video, with digital display and paid social each receiving around $3 million. Event exhibits and sponsorships accounted for $1.8 million, or approximately 5%.
As tech giants and startups compete and collaborate in the AI market, it will be interesting to see how marketing strategies evolve across various ad formats. Can newcomers create compelling campaigns to stand out, or will current incumbents leverage their size and familiarity to stay on top?
